The Mad Dawg is a badge of honour for those brazen enough to complete all five segments in a single ride. Plan it, ride it, and tell your story to earn your place on the Wall of Fame
Note: The Mad Dawg is open all 5 weeks, but only the stage open during your ride can count towards stage points.

Have a bit of a streak going here, can't stop now!
With the luxury of a day off to work, managed to link up this Mad Dawg with the Wednesday Worlds ride to spice things up and really force the legs to push out those watts!
Of course hit up this week's climb before that though, however a strong Northerly headwind meant I only just managed a new PB to post up for the leader board.
Have got some plans for the final 2 weeks' outings to make them extra special! 😉

Beautiful day and I needed to do a long ride, so thought I’d tackle the mad dawg hills. Tried to smash Wright’s hill to see if I could get a PB - success! Also had forgotten how hard Horokiwi was (particularly in a northerly) 😬. Probably should have done the route going the other way to time the stronger winds.

The challenge of a gruelling day of climbing awaits, running out of water and beginning to cramp, will the body break? will I opt out for a pick up? No, salvation in the first dairy since Scenic Drive.
Just one climb remaining, feels like the steepest yet. With tarmac melting, can I keep the cranks turning. Yes, with the feeling of completion, strength returning.
Plenty to get home.

If there's a badge with the word "Mad" in the title I'm there!
Perfect prep for Lake Taupo challenge!!!
Te-Mata Peak, Coops, followed by 40kms of flat Hawkes Bay roads encompassing stage 1 before the climbing started again Ohiti Climb in the opposite direction to Saturdays Ramblers race. With 4 stages ticked off there was another 37km to get to the final stage Torran Hill. Ouch 122km deep and I had nothing left but to hang it there. Oh but wait, its a head wind home!!!. I'm a Mad Dawg 100%

Was getting too used to Wellington, so had to branch out 😉
lol actually had been planning to do this for a while, as I normally do come up to Napier every few weeks. As luck would have it things cooled down nicely this weekend (from the >30 highs earlier in the week!).
Managed to create a nice big counter-clockwise loop to link everything up, quiet roads and fun climbs made for a great day! Heat kicked in for the final ~2hrs but managed to finish strong and roll back home in good time.

'Terrific' idea to start this challenge with a crack at stage 3 Elmore Punishment! With this in the bank, leg and lungs burning, we commenced knocking of the remaining climbs at a somewhat more leisurely pace. The day grew hotter, the legs more fatigued and the times between stops getting shorter. Very grateful to have Rex Lyes for company, generously providing a draft for my increasingly tiring a**. Great day and another one for Strava.

Another early morning pre-workie, wanted to get out and make the most of the strong Southerly. Went hard on both Stage 3 and 5, setting pretty good times on both!
However the rain finally came and was drenching for the last 2hrs, got quite cold as I'd opted for my new aero skinsuit which shockingly wasn't very warm 😅
Contemplated skipping the final climb, saving an hour + head home early to warm up and get out of the rain, but thought to myself "that's the Mad Dawg difference" and carried on

Planned out the mad dawg loop in Taupo, 35km, seemed pretty doable, for every hill climb attempt. Figured I should probably do two attempts at each week. So into week 4, 7 mad dawg attempts in, 3 to go.
Had a particularly eventful ride this loop th. Almost got bowled by a car. Raced some Taupo challenge riders. Got a puncture which I repaired roadside. Was losing air out of my replacement tube and managed a to score a floor pump roadside to finish my loop.

I’d been talking a big game at work, so when my mate Simon reckoned there was no way I could tick off all five Mad Dawg segments in strict chronological order, I had no choice but to prove him wrong. Challenge accepted.
I kicked off early, rolling into the first segment with fresh legs and far too much confidence. The morning was calm, the air cool, and for a moment I thought, “This might actually be fine.”
Spoiler: it wasn’t.
By the second climb the rhythm settled in, and the realisation hit

If it's worth doing once, why not twice?
Had a great time out a week ago so linked up the climbs with a new, more streamlined route and headed off into the beautiful morning. As luck would have it, the forecasted Westerly became a proper Southerly and aided several of the days' climbs (or at least didn't make them any harder!).
Tacked on a couple extra V02Max hill repeats at the end to nudge the distance/elevation into proper Mad Dawg territory 😉

Stage 5 changed and DQ'd my original MAD DAWG - so it had to be laid down again. A steady loop round the 5 Stages in Mist, Rain, Downpours and Sunshine. A break at work for 8 hours to recover then a little spin home between further downpours to complete the loop.
All in a days commute
Thanks guys!!!

Early effort on Atkinson as will definitely be too busy on Sunday. Got the bulk of the climbing done on the first half then timed the tailwind to carry me home. That’s what I told myself! Haven’t seen that much of Auckland in a few years. Man, it’s growing so fast. Didn’t love the city riding. Just a sea of cars. Remember now why weekend long rides with mates is where it’s at. . Bottom line: Auckland is a damn good big city for riding. Love it.

Decided to do the "Six Pack" given the shuffling segments!
Day started beautifully... Remmer... Airport... with Nigel and David in tow. Headed to Titirangi.. collected Simon... Mt Atkinson, Laingholm, donut and coffee at the market. Then headed over the Waitaks - the rain hit on the descent, friends disappeared into a cafe and I soldiered on. By Taupaki it was torrential. Up ridge and finished with Elmore. Back to Riverhead Market for a smash burger, rain cleared. Beaut day out.

Continuing the streak, but adding a twist! In addition to this year's Mad Dawg, added in the 5 climbs from the Welly HC series back in 2024 😉
Between last weekend's efforts and being away this weekend (and the weather), snuck out very early to get this done and make it to work for 10am. Wellington obliged by having the winds pickup overnight just in time for my start, and then continue to strengthen all day into a wind warning!
Only one more week to go!

Only being familiar with 2 of the 5 climbs, I figured what better way to scout them than to link them all up in one ride! Of course hit up this week's segment first so I was fresh 😉
Unfortunately the Welly winds wanted to put a kibosh on things, starting out strong and only getting stronger throughout the day which made (almost) all the climbs that much harder.
Still had a great time and looking forward to putting the climb recon to good use over the next few weeks!
